Its been a while since my last post but theres lot's more coming this week so stay tuned. The NME has had a big re-design lately and my old friend Mark Neil has commisioned me to illustrate their album of the week....well surprisingly ...every week..
Heres a selection of the artists and bands I've done so far. There's two or three versions of each artist
here - I've tried to give them a choice between my more painterly style and my more graphic, collage style - and sometimes I've mixed them both together. Obviously only one version made the final cut. From the top here weve got Paul McCartney, Arcade Fire, Torres, MIA, Cate Le Bon and Eminem.
Conceptually I've tried to keep them quite simple - with McCartney I wanted to show him as someone who is still capable of a breadth of new ideas even though his album has a rich Beatlesesque feel about it - hence the younger version of him in profile. After listening to the new Eminem record I realised how fast and caustic his flow is on this album and came up with the analogy of his pen being used as a weapon.

Here's today's Guardian Guide cover that I've just created. Its for an article on the new movie from Matt Damon and Neil Blomkamp (the director of District 9). Set in the year 2154, where the very wealthy live on a man-made space station while the rest of the population resides on a ruined Earth, Damon's character takes on a mission that could bring equality to the polarized worlds.
I tried to give the cover a bold, political poster like feel with earth represented as a scuzzy, ruined, damaged (but defiant) planet and the Elyssuim space station as a perfect glowing beacon. Click on the image enlarge...
Here's a sneak peek of tomorrow's Guardian Guide cover. It's much more typographic than my usual work but I really enjoyed working on it.

by jimmy turrell on Wednesday, 17 July 2013
Heres some shots of a couple of limited edition posters I've just done (for my brother John Turrell's new album The Kingmaker) in the process of being screenprinted. You'll be able to buy them from his brand new site (which has literally just launched today) very soon. Click here for more details.

I did this for last weekend's cover of the Wall Street Journal supplement 'Off Duty'.

I've just created this artwork for Pedestrian and the rest of the guys at 2nd Drop Records. 2nd Drop have released tracks from Ramadaman, Rusko, LV and South London Ordinance.
The track is a Fela inspired slice of Afrobeat which mixes modern rhythms and sub base to produce something pretty unique. Heard it on Gilles Peterson's show last week and its also getting support from Dark Sky, Djrum and LV.
I wanted to give the artwork a slightly dark, sinister feel with an analog, hand-made aesthetic while still keeping the contemporary tone that runs through the music.Underneath the top (chosen) image are a few other options I gave to the label. Released on July 26th you can pre-order it from the label's website: http://www.surus.co.uk/2nd-drop-records/kalakuta-ndizi-22185.aspx

I've recently completed this billboard campaign for Leo Burnett and FIAT for the new Fiat 500L (the larger version of the 500) which is about to launch all over Europe. The concept here is almost a "campaign within a campaign" as I was asked to create billboard campaign's about other billboards.
Basically the guys at FIAT wanted me to create walls of posters that were then seen to interacted with the car to show off its many features. For example posters of eyes are magnetically drawn to the car's beautiful shape, posters of plants seem to flow from the cars exhaust (showing off its green credentials) and a family of basketball players line up ready to enter the vehicle - again giving an idea of its spacious nature.
It was really great to get back to using simple analog techniques - basically ripping and hand collaging while getting covered in paste and glue. I honestly have to nip myself sometimes with commissions like this - I can't actually believe this is my job!
